Corporate Citizenship and Business Performance (UofL)

Department of Management

Birkbeck,

University of London

Dear Sir or Madam: Nowadays, more and more companies are engaging in corporate citizenship through various community initiatives that create value for society. However, such initiatives (e.g. charitable donations, community investments and commercial community initiatives) may also be good for business. You are invited to participate in this survey to assess the relationship between the different types of community initiatives and business performance. This survey is performed as part of my PhD study at Birkbeck, University of London.

In the first part of the survey you are asked to list 10 different community initiatives your company has undertaken during the last 3 years and associate them with different categories. In the second part you will be presented with 8 scenarios that you are asked to evaluate potential answers based on your company’s experience with community initiatives, so far. In the third part of the survey you are asked for company performance information including total sales, total assets, profit after taxes, long term debt and shareholders’ equity. You are also asked to assess your company in relation to product/services quality, innovation, leadership, workplace, governance, citizenship, and performance. In the last part of the survey you are asked to give additional company details including number of employees, advertising costs and research and development costs, where relevant. Your answers are strictly confidential and are kept on a password protected folder. Data from this survey is shared or used for any other purpose and will be deleted upon completion of the publication process. There will be no identifying information about you or the company in any reports that will be published. Published results will be reported only on the aggregate level so that there will be no way to identify you or individual companies.

It will take about 20 minutes to complete this survey. In return for your support and cooperation the main findings of the study will be shared with you so that you (and only you) will be able to assess your company’s performance in relation to your peers. You may decline to participate or may terminate the survey at any time, before or after the submission of the survey by emailing me at jboudi01@mail.bbk.ac.uk.   Please note that this project has received ethics approval from the Department of Management, Birkbeck, University of London.
